E Fry complimentary Tea and Dessert on Saturday, May 9th, 2009 from 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm
The Elizabeth Fry Society of New Brunswick is a not for profit organization dedicated to serving women involved in the criminal justice system and women at risk in the community. The Society works to address issues of homelessness, poverty, employment, parenting, addictions, abuse and many other issues that commonly impact women’s lives. Our primary work is to advocate for the provision of programs and services and to develop such programs and services where they do not exist. The Elizabeth Fry Society has been in existence since 1958 and is a member organization of the Canadian Association of Elizabeth Fry Societies (CAEFS).
The Society offers their services to all women in the community if they identify a need. The Society provides services to women, young or old, who have the potential to come into conflict with the law. It also provides support to women who are experiencing physical, emotional or financial difficulties that may be the result of addictive behaviours or living in abusive situations.
The Elizabeth Fry Society is an organization dedicated to serving women from all walks of life, not only of those in prison. It provides a safe, healing environment for strength and re-growth. It defends the rights of women, while working to ensure fair treatment in the criminal justice system. Above all, the society views women not as objects to be dismissed, but as human beings who can make a positive contribution to our society. Our mandate is to act as an advocate for those women who for various reasons are disabled in their ability to act for themselves. This may include upholding a cause, defending by argument, or interceding on someone’s behalf.
National Elizabeth Fry Week is always the week preceding Mother's Day. The majority of women in prison are mothers. Most of them were the sole supporters of their families at the time they were incarcerated. When mothers are sentenced to prison, they and their children are also sentenced to separation. Many women find this the most severe punishment. We try to draw attention to this reality by ending Elizabeth Fry Week on Mother's Day each year.
In Celebration of Elizabeth Fry Week the Elizabeth Fry Society of New Brunswick invites the community of Moncton to a Mother’s Day Tea Party.
Please join us for complimentary Tea and Dessert on Saturday, May 9th, 2009 from 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm at our offices located at 76 Archibald Street in Moncton.
